The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Photography is designed to develop the skills and knowledge that will allow you to either continue in Higher Education or find employment.

This course is designed for those who want to pursue a career in the photographic industry. We have created an exciting specialist vocational programme that will develop keen business grounding along with providing up-to-date practical skills and visual awareness.

The HND Photography course emphasises the creative use of photography across a wide range of subject areas. The course encourages exploration of contemporary photographic practice, and includes critical and contextual studies. Traditional photographic techniques are investigated, as well as digital image manipulation. Students gain vocational skills through the integrated business practice and professional studies units.

Over two years you will, in turn, concentrate on a number of different elements of photography. These include: fashion photography, location photography, photo journalism and darkroom practice. The broad variety of modules will help you discover which area of photography you are particularly passionate about and we will offer the career guidance you need to pursue that passion professionally. You will develop your technical skills of photography, whilst exploring images from a critical stance and develop your practical skills in the field or in and studio. The final semester will demonstrate the expert skills you have mastered throughout the programme through the creation of your own project. Through demonstrating professional skills, techniques and critical understanding, you will be expected to create a professional portfolio of work which will assist you in pursuing a successful career in the industry. This course will provide you with all the artistic and technical skills you need to be a successful photographer.

You will work with a range of specialist lecturers, including practising artists, in well-equipped studios and workshops. Project briefs are set for each assignment, and you are encouraged to develop a personal response to each task. All activities are supported through one-to-one tutorials and group discussions to inform you of personal progress and to aid assessment. Assessment is continuous throughout the course, with assignments graded at the end of each project.

You can progress to the 3rd year Top Up degree to obtain a full honours degree, in a related art, design or photography course.

The course provides you with the knowledge and understanding of photography needed to qualify for entry-level, industry positions as a commercial or fine art photographer, picture editor or researcher, or photographic assistant. Pursue a career as an advertising photographer, studio/portraiture photographer, photo journalist, layout designer, illustrator, commercial designer, fashion photographer, graphic artist/designer, interactive media, package designer or web designer – graphic design. The students also develop skills that can enable them to develop careers in a wide range of related industries such as Arts Administration, Education, Media Practice and research and much more.

Government Founds                                                                                                        

This programme has been designated by the UK government for Student Finance, which means that UK/EU students may apply for Student Loans. If you are a UK or EU undergraduate student, you can apply for funding from the government. You do not have to pay your tuition fees up front if this is your first degree – you can get a tuition fee loan to cover your full course fees. You may be eligible for maintenance loan and some extra support as well, depends on your circumstances. You only start to pay back your student loan after you finish studying and are earning over £25,000 a year.

HND Fashion and Textiles

The HND in Fashion and Textiles is a two year qualification designed to equip you with a wide range of creative and technical skills which will allow you to work as a fashion or textile designer within the industry. Studying fashion in the hub of London will allow you to utilise the wonderful cultural facilities to inspire and develop your work. This course will challenge your preconceptions of the fashion design process and the potential range of career paths available to you within the fashion industry.

Aspiring fashion designers gain a nationally recognised qualification and vital industry skills through this 2 years Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textiles. Students will explore the fashion industry and its related disciplines and roles, covering technical and design fundamentals and how to generate new trends and ideas.

The course will also place your design skills within a live working context and prepare you for the professional world of work with industry experience and professional practice units, integrated into the programme structure.

The HND in Fashion and Textiles course is for students with some previous academic experience or personal interest in art and design who have the ambition to further develop a professional fashion textile focus with in their work. The programme will allow you to experience and develop your knowledge of the fashion textile design process within the context of a professional studio setting.

Students will explore the fashion industry and its related disciplines and roles, covering technical and design fundamentals and how to generate new trends and ideas. The course incorporates practical hands-on assignments to more accurately reflect the fashion industry. Key areas include fashion design, pattern drafting, textiles behaviour and sewing and making skills for fashion, lingerie and sportswear. These are taught alongside business-focussed subjects including garment manufacturing, promotion, marketing and styling. Students will also explore influences such as culture, street style, new technology and lifestyle trends.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged and guided to develop your own practice by combining practical skills, drawing and design development and the awareness of its application within the creative industries. You are required to complete substantial amount of practical work which must be evidenced through, sketchbooks, annotation of work, and producing an end outcomes based on a theme/tasks. The work completed will form part of your course assessment. It is assessed and graded internally by a combination of: practical work with end outcomes, presentations, exhibitions and written work. The work produced will relate to specific unit assignments.

You could progress further in your studies into the 3rd year BA Hons Fashion Design or relevant fields.

The HND in Computer Game Animation allows students to enhance a range of practical skills for the development of computer games. On this course you will develop thorough grounding in the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for a career in graphic design. The strong emphasis throughout the course is on creativity and practical work. You will be challenged to experiment with advanced projects in art and design in an imaginative and considered way. You will work with both given and self-defined briefs to create a portfolio of art and design work. You will be given an opportunity to explore different areas of graphic design, such as, digital imaging, corporate design, and contextual referencing, typography and idea generation techniques. You will also develop a critical awareness of the historical and professional issues relevant to graphic design practice. You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and practical laboratory sessions. On successful completion of the Level 5 HND, students will have the opportunity to apply to study for a full degree at many universities in the UK. HND Education and Training (DET)

This qualification is based on structures recognised by Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS). It is designed for teachers or trainers in the post-compulsory educational sector or individuals who which to acquire a nationally recognised qualification in teaching and are not yet employed as teachers.

It is suitable also for those who train, teach or assess others on a regular basis or who have similar roles within voluntary or community activity.

The Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is the ultimate qualification for teaching or training and has been developed in conjunction with Ofqual and is recognised by the Society for Education and Training. The Diploma in Education and Training is a recognised route to gaining Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, enabling you to teach in schools, colleges and in further education.

This course will enable you to take a practical and analytical approach to all the aspects of training and education, right from planning and designing learning through to teaching, assessing and supporting learners. You will also cover the theories and principles of education and training and be given the opportunity to embed these in your own teaching and practice.

Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will take an analytical, reflective and practical approach to all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, candidates will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice.

The programme is delivered through a variety of methods which are helpful for learners to link theory and practice. Students are encouraged to become reflective practitioners. They will study various theories and legislation, learn how to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate. Furthermore they will consider teaching and learning for a range of groups and individuals.

The Diploma in education and training course includes face-to-face training days, one to one tutorials, workplace assessment and the completion of all mandatory and optional assignments as well as a teaching practice portfolio. During this programme, there will be opportunities for workshops, discussions, and group work to support what has been studied. All students will be guided at every step towards achieving their goals.

In order to achieve this qualification successfully, students will need to demonstrate a depth of knowledge and understanding of each unit. Each student will be required to conduct his/her own independent research, and show evidence of their reading and research by maintaining an ongoing reflective journal of their practice and development.

Students will be assessed using centre devised Written Assignments, Portfolio Building, Self and Peer Assessments, as well as Presentations including Group Presentations. All assignments are graded as a Pass.

On successful completion of the DET course, students can apply for their Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills (QTLS) status or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) through the Education and Training Foundation (ETF).

Learners who have achieved the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training as per the Qualification & Credit Framework (QCF) can Top Up their qualification to a BA (Hons) in related field such us Education Studies, Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, Professional Practice, Primary Initial Teacher Education or Level 7 Diploma in Assessment Management (QCF).

This Diploma qualification is recognised as equivalent to the Certificate of Education qualifications in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ). Upon successful completion of the course, a student could qualify as a teacher, trainer or tutor in Further Education Colleges, Adult and community learning, Work-based learning, Training providers, Public and uniformed services training among others.
