The BA/BSc (Hons) Law course involves a rigorous study of the law, in which you will learn the law’s content and develop sound legal analysis skills. The programme has been specifically designed to fulfil the needs of students wishing to move into the legal professions, become Solicitors or Barristers, and who need a qualifying law degree (QLD).

What you need to know about the BA/BSc (Hons) Law course

Explore the fundamental principles of law in England and Wales on a qualifying law degree recognised by both the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board.

You will gain a solid grounding in critical areas such as legal methods and skills, constitutional law, criminal law and property law. Depending on your size of interest, you can also specialise in a range of subjects, including family law, media and entertainment law, company law and human rights. Throughout your Law course, you will learn how to argue a case effectively in court, interview clients and negotiate agreements, benefitting from simulated trials and tribunals in our Moot Court Room.

Law plays an essential part in all areas of life. The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) offers an education that can lead to a wide range of careers inside and outside the legal profession. Through the study of law, you will gain a skill set that meets the high demands of any legal job, including analytical and research skills, knowledge of the law and its implications, social appreciation, public responsibility and communication skills.

The law course is accredited as a Qualifying Law Degree in England and Wales by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board. It gives exemption from the academic qualification stage for both branches of the legal profession. Therefore it is ideal for those intending to qualify as solicitors or barristers.

Students benefit from the court and prison visits, a dedicated Moot Room for moots and mock trials, and a Law and Criminal Justice block. The Law team has strong links with the local legal profession, and visiting law firms and barristers provides students with career advice.

This practical law course is designed to make you ‘career-ready’ by giving you the skills you need to succeed in legal practice. It is perfect if you want to move on to the Legal Practice Course (LPC) to become a solicitor or take the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) if you aim to be a barrister. The knowledge and skills developed in this course will open the doors to various rewarding careers.

Career opportunities

About half of our law graduates seek careers in the legal profession, as solicitors or barristers after further study and training. However, a law degree can open many doors outside of the legal profession. Entry requirements

Minimum Age: 18 years old;
Applicants are required to submit proof of prior certificated learning (e.g. Secondary School Diploma/Baccalaureate/Level 3 qualification) and/or relevant work experience;
Applications from mature candidates without formal qualifications are welcomed provided they could demonstrate appropriate levels of relevant ability and experience.
If you are unable to meet the entry requirements for this course you may still be eligible for our Foundation year course. This is an extra year of study to prepare you for the full degree.
Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language.
Applicants must bring their original certificates when coming for registration;

Assessment

You will have a variety of different summative assessment methods; the precise approach depends on the individual module. For the core subjects most modules assess by examination, some by essay, or a combination. There is a degree of variation in the examination method adopted, with some using seen and open-book examinations instead of the traditional unseen examinations. Optional modules are also predominantly assessed by various forms of examination and essay, although a number employ different forms of assessment such as small group presentation, blog entry, portfolio, law reform project or oral presentation.

Funding

Self-Funding

The Tuition Fee of the course will vary depending on the institution you wish to study in, as well as your status in the UK. The course is available for UK/EU and International Students as well. Please contact us to find out the tuition fee for a specific course you’d like to know about.

Government Funds – Student Finance England

If you are an UK/EU citizen or living in the UK on Indefinite stay, you can receive support from the government via Student Loan Company to cover tuition fees and some living costs while studying, depending on your circumstances. Tuition fee loans, to cover the full cost of your course, are paid directly to the course provider. Maintenance loans can be applied for at the same time, lending you money at the start of each term. You won’t have to pay back the loan until after your course, when you’re earning above a certain level. Students can still apply for grants if they’re eligible for certain benefits, disabled, or need help with childcare costs.
