HND Travel and Tourism Management | The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management offers those who have an interest in the dynamic world of travel and tourism and hospitality and events management, an opportunity to explore the sector and develop the skills required to work in this competitive industry. Developed in consultation with tourism and hospitality sector employers, the HND is a specialist work-related programme of study, covering the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in today’s tourism industry.

The course combines wide-ranging subject areas with detailed insights into key areas of operation. Learners develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as a manager and leader in a Travel and Tourism organisation.

Level 5 HND Diploma in Travel and Tourism Management is designed to equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to ensure employability in the travel and tourism industry. Students completing the course work in retail and business travel, for airlines or at the airport, in hotels and for tour operators both in this country and overseas. The course is a logical step towards a managerial position within the industry and a BA Honours degree.

The HND Travel and Tourism Management course also provides the perfect starting point for greater academic achievements, with progression opportunities to a full honours degree and better employment opportunities. Travel and tourism is a dynamic industry incorporating a wide range of sectors that offer a variety of career paths. As the industry matures, specialist knowledge of the various sectors has become the key to success and consequently a proactive approach to learning is adopted with a business development focus throughout. The course is linked to professional body requirements, and offers a strong, sector related emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of knowledge and understanding.

Direct entry into employment offers the potential for progression into a wide range of positions in tourism or hospitality organisations, within both the private and public sectors.

Employment in management positions in travel, tourism and hospitality organisations such as hotels, travel agencies, tour operations, airlines, airports, resort representatives and tourist attractions.

  • Minimum Age: 18 years old;
  • Applicants are required to submit proof of prior certificated learning (e.g. Secondary School Diploma/Baccalaureate/Level 3 qualification) or relevant work experience;
  • Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language;
  • An interview with the college is compulsory prior student registration.
  • Applicants must bring their original certificates when coming for registration;

Assessment

Assessment is based on assignments, typically one assignment per unit. These assignments will vary and include a mix of formal reports, presentations and practical tasks, but there will be no formal exams.  You won’t have to write any exams during your HND; instead you will focus on gaining practical, applicable skills through real-world case studies and group and individual assignments.  Learners are assessed using a variety of methods, including group work, tutorials, lectures, seminars presentations, role play and case study analyses, written assignments. All units will be individually graded as ‘passes, ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’. To achieve a full qualification you must pass all 8 units to achieve the higher certificate and all 16 units to achieve the higher diploma.

Progression

The HND in Travel and Tourism Management is a two-year full-time higher education course, providing natural progression onto further higher education courses. The HND in Travel and Tourism Management can be extended to a full degree (Bachelor) by undertaking a third year degree (Top-Up) at university in a related field of Tourism and Hospitality.

Self-Funding

Government Funds – Student Finance England 

This programme has been designated by the UK government for Student Finance, which means that UK/EU students may apply for Student Loans. If you are a UK or EU undergraduate student, you can apply for funding from the government. You do not have to pay your tuition fees up front if this is your first degree – you can get a tuition fee loan to cover your full course fees. You may be eligible for maintenance loan and some extra support as well, depends on your circumstances. You only start to pay back your student loan after you finish studying and are earning over £25,000 a year.
