Course overview

The BA (Hons) Criminology with Foundation Year is designed for students who are interested in crime, criminal behaviour, justice systems, and the social factors that influence offending and victimisation. The course provides an understanding of how crime is studied, prevented, and managed within modern society while exploring the relationship between law, social issues, and criminal justice institutions.
The Foundation Year offers additional academic support and introduces students to key concepts related to social sciences, communication, research, and critical thinking before progressing to degree-level study.
Throughout the programme, students explore areas such as criminological theory, policing, criminal justice systems, youth crime, social inequality, victimology, punishment, rehabilitation, and contemporary issues in crime and society. The course combines theoretical understanding with real-world application, encouraging students to critically analyse criminal behaviour, public policy, and the effectiveness of justice systems.
Students also develop transferable skills including communication, analytical thinking, research, teamwork, problem-solving, and professional awareness, preparing them for careers across criminal justice, public services, and related sectors.
