Civil engineers are in charge of nearly all of the world’s great buildings. It is their jobs that make our lives easier, from highways and airports to access to safe drinking water and electricity. BSc (Hons) Engineering (civil) degree will help students to get a better understanding of the technological design and management process of civil engineering.

Students will be introduced to key skills in structures, such as fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials. They will also gain the expertise and skills that managers need through a combination of workshops, real-world assessments and site tours.

Assessment

The course is assessed in terms of practice through assessments including practical implementations, reports, essays, presentations, group work and examinations. Most modules are designed to develop problem solving techniques and interpersonal skills and many provide the opportunity for group work

Civil Engineering Top-up

BSc (Hons) Engineering (Civil) (Top-up) course has a focus on hydraulics, structural design and civil engineering management. 

As many students are particularly confident and comfortable utilizing current software and systems within the construction industry, they find the project management, construction and engineering design elements most appropriate to learn in line with their career aspirations and prospects. 

Throughout the course students will develop skills in some particular areas such as civil engineering theory, particular structures and infrastructure design.

The program is taught by experienced professionals in the field, using modern techniques and methods and have a focus on some particular key design skills in structures, soil mechanics, geology, fluids, materials and surveying. 

It also follows a vocational approach for both teaching and assessments and is informed and directed by the current market requirements.

HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering

The HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering course is for those who are employed or seeking employment at technician or engineer level in electrical or electronic engineering environment. This course offers a broad range of skills and insight, in preparation for a career in the electrical or electronic engineering industry. By studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering you can choose from a range of units that will allow you to tailor your studies towards electronics or electrical power, or a combination of the two.

Using electricity to process and store the information behind technology such as mobile phones and computers, as well as a huge range of systems in commerce and industry, is the principle that underlies electrical /electronic engineering. Both depend on the same fundamental scientific laws, but diverge widely beyond these starting points. As technology progresses, we become more reliant on electrical and electronic systems to control mechanical devises and as such the opportunities for employment in this sector have increased. The Higher National Diploma (HND) Programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is strongly vocational and forms a solid basis in Electrical and Electronic Engineering fundamentals. It aims to produce high quality, creative technicians and engineers. Higher National Diploma qualifications are widely welcomed by the employers, recognised by many international professional bodies and having access to UK and other universities to enter into the second or final year of a honours degree in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering.

The course will develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to bring together engineering elements in project based assignments related to the needs of the engineering sector. The Higher National Diploma Electrical and Electronic Engineering provides you with a programme of study over a range of disciplines to help you develop skills to progress your career through employment or further education at degree level. The course will teach you core engineering principles and demonstrate how the knowledge you gain can be used effectively in the workplace. The programme has been developed in consultation with local industry, and combines theory and practical work a focus on industrial applications.

This course is for those who are employed or seeking employment at technician or engineer level in electrical or electronic engineering environment. An HND award opens up the possibility of a career in a range of engineering disciplines including design, manufacturing, project management and IT. The qualification provides you with the opportunity to seek career development into senior positions in national and international companies. Further studies will open more opportunities to work as a technician/technician engineer in electrical and electronics design, power engineering manufacture, maintenance, testing or fault finding.

  • Minimum Age: 18 years old;
  • Applicants are required to submit proof of prior certificated learning (e.g. Secondary School Diploma/Baccalaureate/Level 3 qualification) or relevant work experience;
  • Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language;

Assessment

Assessment is based on assignments, typically one assignment per unit. These assignments will vary and include a mix of formal reports, presentations and practical tasks, but there will be no formal exams.  You won’t have to write any exams during your HND; instead you will focus on gaining practical, applicable skills through real-world case studies and group and individual assignments.  Learners are assessed using a variety of methods, including group work, tutorials, lectures, seminars presentations, role play and case study analyses, written assignments. All units will be individually graded as ‘passes, ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’. To achieve a full qualification you must pass all 8 units to achieve the higher certificate and all 16 units to achieve the higher diploma.

Progression

After completion you can progress to the 3rd year at the university and apply for a Top-Up course in related engineering areas such as electrical engineering, electronics or communications engineering.

Created specifically for students interested in the civil engineering and construction sector, Construction and Built Environment (Civil Engineering) course will develop you as a professional and self-reflecting individual able to meet all the requirements within the sector. 

The BTEC Higher National Diploma in Construction and Built Environment (Civil Engineering) will help you develop strong communication skills in order to manage projects, on-site teams and client requirements. 

The objectives of the course are as follows: 

  • To prepare you for the global building environment with the skills, knowledge and judgement necessary to accomplish high performance in the built environment sector.
  • To equip you with the education and training fundamental for careers such as civil engineering, building services engineering, construction management, architectural technology, etc.
